I was speaking at a seminar Friday & a guy came up to me. He said, “I’ve been following you for a long long time, love your stuff. Can I ask you some questions about Google?”

Sure thing. First Question:

“Google just sent me this letter, offering to have their staff help me optimize my account. Should I do it?”

First Answer:

“ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET GOOGLE EMPLOYEES ‘OPTIMIZE’ YOUR ACCOUNT. An angry mob of gangbangers in your front yard with 134 cans of spray paint would do less damage than a Google staff member “improving” your $5,000 AdWords campaign.”

He explains how he manages campaigns for a bunch of different local businesses. I assume he’s familiar with all the basic stuff I teach…

Second Question:

“My customers’ campaigns are all local and they get tiny trickles of traffic so it really doesn’t make sense for me to test ads since it would take me months to get a result.”

Second Answer:

“It ALWAYS makes sense to test your ads. If it takes 3 months to get an answer it’s way better than never asking the question in the first place.”

I’m beginning to realize he’s never read my Definitive Guide. Or if he has, he hasn’t *really* read it. I’m reminded there are LOTS of people like this.

So he signs up for Renaissance Club which gets him a Definitive Guide and gains him access to my breakout Q&A session. In that session he opens up his account.

Dang, there’s all kinds of things he’s doing wrong…

-Every single keyword is broad match

-No split testing

-Ugly display URL’s are murdering his Click Thru Rate

-Bad copy in his ads

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Poor guy, he’s paying TONS of stupidity tax to Google.

If he read through my Definitive Guide and took some basic notes, he would 3X his performance with 2 hours of edits. That’s $1,000 per hour work if there ever was such a thing.

I certainly hope he does make those changes & I’m sure he will.

Meanwhile I’ve got a question for you:

How much stupidity tax are YOU paying Google??? Does it feel like they’ve got a needle in your veins and they’re sucking all the blood they want?

Are you feeling woozy yet?

Google LOVES it when you pay stupidity tax. More free lunches in Larry & Sergey’s 5-Star-Chef Cafeteria, thank you very much. Plus you can’t find Google’s phone number and they answer your emails with mindless reps in India who paste canned replies. So if your campaigns crash and burn or get shut down, you never get a straight answer as to why.

(Sad as that is, the day Google’s customer service improves is the day I sell off my Google stock. When you’re #1 in the world you can treat people like cattle and get away with it.)

Google’s job is to THIN THE HERD. My job is to FATTEN THE HERD. (My herd.)

Google will NOT help you squeeze the most juice out of the orange. It’s not their job.

Their job is to squeeze the most juice out of YOU.

Sorry the most appropriate analogies here are agriculture and farm animals. Fact is, either Google is the farm animal or you are. And in the end, you’re the one who decides who’s getting milked.

Using Money to Make Money

It’s a common business notion that if you want to make money, you have to spend money. One good way of spending money for business gain is through advertising. Advertising brings in the people because through advertising, they know that there is such a company or product in existence. With the right type of advertising, you can see the spurt of traffic growth to your site. With a high volume of traffic, even if only a small portion or percentage turns out to be buying customers it is still a good average of profit generating income.

Right now, there is no other advertising scheme that would be worth every cent than using Google’s Adwords. The surge in popularity of Google’s Adwords is very evident as you can see so many sites sporting this ad scheme. 1. If you sell coffee as a commodity, it’s worth 2 cents a cup. If you sell it as a good, it’s worth 25 cents a cup. If you sell it as a service it’s worth $1.00 a cup. If you sell it as an experience, it’s $5.00 a cup. A 250:1 difference between commodity and experience.

2. Meaning: Getting ahead by slashing prices is cutting your own throat. You MUST take a lead from Starbucks and deliver an entire customer experience. Move UPSTREAM, not down.

3. Your marketing plan MUST include Google. Love ‘em, hate ‘em, Mother’s Milk or Big Brother, there is no avoiding this fact.

4. If your marketing plan ONLY includes Google, you’re an accident waiting to happen. You must invoke the Unlimited Traffic Technique and elevate your conversions to a level where you can compete on any level playing field. Once accept this reality, you liberate yourself from the mosh pit of misery and mediocrity.

5. If you have a successful affiliate business and it’s still standing, congratulations. You still  have time to move to higher ground. Time to move NOW.

6. After 3 days in Maui (one of the most intense learning experiences ever) one conclusion everyone reached at the end of day 3 was this: *Regardless of where you buy clicks, if you don’t have an Autoresponder sequence, you’re leaving 2/3rds of the money on the table.* Social Media is a freaking a waste of time compared to just TEN well-written emails. In my opinion if you don’t have AR’s in place you’re lucky to still be alive.

7. The principle of the Slight Edge says: If you’re just 5% better than everyone else you get 50% more of the spoils.

8. There is no such thing as One Single Ideal marketing message, anymore than there is One Single Ideal shrub in the jungle. What you need is  a toolbox of effective hooks that work with different kinds of people. That is the premise of the Swiss Army Knife.

9. Market Research is crucial. In 2004 you could afford to sling mud against the wall. Not in 2010. Ask your prospects the right 3 questions and sort the data right and your chances of success in a startup go from 5% to 50% overnight.

10. Most people now are on the defensive. They’ve shuttered their doors and windows and they’re trying to ride out the recession. That’s just slow motion suicide. Those who prevail have decided to be 21st century alchemists and every single day they’re trying to figure out how to deliver a more awesome customer experience.

In a virtual marketplace, search engine plays an imperative role in bringing success to online business since most of the searches for products and services are done through search engines. Therefore, we can easily make out how important it is to get a secure position in a search engine result listing page if one has to excel in online business.

Just making an appealing and content saturated website using soothing colors never seems profitable. Your site must undergo search engine optimization (SEO) process with the help of search engine optimizers to make it compatible enough to appear in an influential position in a search engine result page (SERP).

However, SEO is not a process of eating a ripe fruit but it involves process of showing a seed, watering the germinated plant constantly, letting it flower that converts to a fruit and ultimately eating a ripe fruit. Hence for any SEO strategies to show some result, it may take time varying from 2 or 3 months to a year or more. But, the people who are impatient to go ahead with SEO process and want instant online visibility and Web traffic to their website, they can opt for services like pay per click.

Pay per click gives a guaranteed listing of your website in SERP and it is a process of advertising your website in such a way where you are charged nothing for advertising but will be charged for each click made by the visitors. You are allowed to select the keywords and bid on it. Higher the bidding rate, greater will be the chances of appearing your website at the top of sponsor listing of SERP.

I was a desperately struggling sales rep in 1997 and I drove to Peoria Illinois for a big “Success” event with speakers like Norman Schwarzkopf and Zig Ziglar. I first encountered Dan Kennedy there. Dan was the last speaker of the day and he talked about replacing cold-calling grunt work with cost-effective advertising and marketing.

Since I was spending most of every day pounding the phone, this news was oxygen to a drowning man. I was mesmerized. I found a credit card that still had some room on it and bought his Magnetic Marketing System.

It changed my life.

Fast forward one year: I’ve found a new job where they’ll actually let me use some of Dan’s ideas (the previous boss thought I’d bought swampland in Florida, and told me to get back to work) and the new marketing techniques were working. I was getting sales leads for my industrial hardware and software products from our website every day.

I was suddenly experiencing the LUXURY of “Marketing on Autopilot.” Which meant: Every morning when I came in the office, I had 4-12 hot, fresh sales leads that had come in via email, fax, or one of our reps or distributors or a magazine article we’d published.

Compared to making phone calls all day, this was a dream.

Now that I didn’t have to spend time prospecting, I was liberated to spend time consulting with my customers; creating marketing campaigns to get more customers; solving my customers’ problems.

I could cherry pick the best sales opportunities and focus on them.
